Your Guide to Maintaining your Pergola Through the Winter

Pergolas are a good investment when it comes to using the extra space outside your house, it allows you to participate in outdoor activities like family gatherings, barbeque parties with friends or simply just sitting by yourself enjoying the morning sunrise with a hot cup of tea without having to go far away from home.

Since you have taken the effort to build a pergola outside your house as an additional attraction it is also necessary to preserve it for future use, in order to protect it in the winter here are some tips that will be helpful.

Sweeping

You can start by sweeping away all the fallen leaves, the dirt and the dust from the floor of your pergola. Don’t just sweep its floor but also look at the roof too. This is so that you can get rid of any cobwebs that might be hidden in the corners. Also look out for other small insects that might be hiding, keep an eye out for any signs of mildew or molds. In order for you to get the best results, it is important to start this process before the cold sets in.

Cleansing and Disinfecting

The next step is to clean off any accumulated dirt or dust that might still be left because it is outdoors. This can be done using a garden hose by spraying your pergola with water also make sure to use a soft bristled brush so that you don’t scratch its surface.

If you notice any signs of mold or mildew then you can use a mild detergent or a mildew cleaner to get rid of them. This happens due to exposure to extreme moisture that is caused due to heavy rainfall or heavy snowfall.

Polishing

If you have a wooden pergola it is advisable to polish or stain this outdoor living space before the winter.

Since it is outdoors it is exposed to heavy rainfall or snow and due to the moisture the wood begins to expand and contract which causes permanent damage and leads to more expenditure than that incurred for staining or polishing your pergola.

Along with protecting your pergola it also makes your pergola seem new and look more attractive to visitors.

Other things to do during winter

It is not only important to take care of your pergola before but also during the winter season, because it is important to sweep off the snow that lies on your rafters adding to the weight which might make your rafters weak or breakable. You should sweep away any snow that might surround your pergola.

If you happen to live in an old house and the pergola seems to be very old and breakable it is advisable to replace it with a new one for the safety of your loved ones. Today there are a variety of designs that are available in the market that are modern and will help enhance the feature of your home. For example, plant hanger designs, outdoor kitchen designs, outdoor louvered design, outdoor swing design, backyard designs, outdoor seating design

Now that you know the measures that should be taken before the winter sets in and how to maintain your pergola during the winter, it will be easy for you to take care of it through the harsh winters and to increase its life period.
